About the Original Firehouse

Hook & Ladder Company No. 8 was constructed in 1903 as one of the first Beaux-Arts style firehouses designed by architect Alexander H. Stevens following the formation of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Originally built with two apparatus doors, the building was modified in 1913 when Varick Street was widened, reducing the structure to its current size.

The firehouse has remained an active FDNY station for more than a century. Firefighters from Hook & Ladder Company No. 8 were among the first responders during the September 11, 2001 attacks, and the station continues to serve the community today after extensive preservation efforts and renovations.

A Hollywood Landmark

The firehouse achieved worldwide fame as the exterior headquarters of the Ghostbusters in the 1984 film. Although the interior scenes were filmed elsewhere, the instantly recognizable exterior became one of the most iconic movie locations in cinematic history. The building has since appeared in additional Ghostbusters productions as well as films and television shows including Hitch, Seinfeld, and How I Met Your Mother, and has even inspired collectible building sets and memorabilia.
