Cheyenne Mountain Complex – Military Bunker & NORAD Command Center Model

Bring one of America's most iconic Cold War-era military installations to your layout or diorama with this highly detailed Cheyenne Mountain Complex model. Inspired by the legendary underground command facility located outside Colorado Springs, Colorado, this structure captures the history and engineering behind one of the world's most recognizable hardened defense sites.

The Cheyenne Mountain Complex was developed during the Cold War as a hardened command-and-control center designed to protect critical defense operations from long-range bombers, ballistic missiles, and nuclear attack. Built deep inside Cheyenne Mountain, the facility became the underground home of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and was engineered to operate as a self-sustaining underground city.

Located approximately 2,000 feet beneath the mountain surface, the real facility features massive blast doors, independent buildings mounted on shock-absorbing springs, filtered air systems, backup power generation, water supplies, and advanced communication systems designed to keep operations running during extreme events.

Historic Highlights:

Construction on the Cheyenne Mountain Complex began in 1961 and the facility became operational in 1967 after years of excavation through solid granite. Workers removed approximately 693,000 tons of rock using more than a million pounds of explosives to create the massive underground complex.

The facility was designed to survive extreme conditions, featuring 25-ton blast doors, miles of tunnels, independent buildings, emergency power systems, filtered air, and water reserves. The buildings inside the mountain were mounted on more than 1,300 shock-absorbing springs, allowing them to move independently during a blast or seismic event.
