About Split Rock Lighthouse
Completed in 1910 by the United States Lighthouse Service, Split Rock Lighthouse was constructed following the devastating Mataafa Storm of 1905, which claimed 29 ships on Lake Superior. Built into a 133-foot sheer cliff, the octagonal structure features a steel-framed brick tower topped with a large steel lantern housing a third-order Fresnel lens manufactured in Paris, France.
